A rollercoaster 2024/25 campaign came to a screeching halt for Tottenham Hotspur with an embarrassing final-day 4-1 home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.
Tottenham have endured a polarising season marked by the ecstatic high of ending a 17-year wait for a trophy and the low of finishing just above the relegation zone in the Premier League. Read on as we recap the 2024/25 season, discuss manager Ange Postecoglou’s future and analyse what the club must do in the summer transfer window.
A Contrasting Season
Spurs came into the season hoping to atone for their failure to secure Champions League football but endured a horrendous domestic campaign that fans will never forget.
Tottenham ended the season with 22 defeats in 38 league games (W11, D5). The results and performances were terrible, although injuries played their part. However, even when manager Ange Postecoglou had his complete squad to choose from, the showings were still largely uninspiring. It was a different story in Europe.
Tottenham defied the odds to win the Europa League and clinch a trophy after a long wait. Spurs showed crucial characteristics they failed to display domestically – cohesion and a spine.
They dug deep against Eintracht Frankfurt and Manchester United. Spurs fought tooth and nail for the title and deservedly clinched it after coming through the fire. Tottenham have secured Champions League football for next season. They can also say they gave a good account of themselves by reaching the League Cup semi-final.
Unfortunately, it is not good enough. The season should be judged by the league campaign and not by one-offs in tournament football. Spurs had a shameful season that cannot be repeated.
Spurs Must Back Postecoglou to Fix His Mistakes

Postecoglou wants to turn things around, and Tottenham would be silly not to give him the opportunity.
The Australian tactician knows their shortcomings and will be desperate to prove his doubters wrong. Chairman Daniel Levy needs to keep the faith with him.
Spurs won the Europa League playing a different brand of football from his gung-ho philosophy. They won the final with 26 percent possession and showed defensive resolve.
His all-hell-breaks-loose football gave way to a more calculated system that allowed Spurs to defend better against Man United.
Postecoglou, more than any incoming manager, knows what this team needs to bounce back, and you would not bet against the former Australia national team manager.
Premier League betting sites will be inundated with wagers backing the 59-year-old to atone for this season because he is a winner.
If Tottenham strengthen their squad this summer, the odds on them securing a top four finish in the Premier League could offer sports bettors some value.
Bolstering the Squad to Compete in the Premier League
Tottenham need significant upgrades in several positions across the pitch to deliver a competitive 2025/26 Premier League campaign.
Firstly, Spurs need steel in midfield. They were often overrun in the engine room this season. Rodrigo Bentancur did his best, but an upgrade is a must.
Next on the agenda is a replacement for Atletico Madrid target Cristian Romero. Los Colchoneros are likely to bid for the Argentine this summer.
Tottenham also need a spark in attack and should be in the mix for Lyon’s Rayan Cherki. The €40 million-rated French playmaker would give Spurs a new dimension in attack.
Cherki created numerous chances for his teammates in Ligue 1 and the Europa League. With European giants hesitating to take the punt, Spurs should sign him to add creativity to their squad.
Spurs also need competition for Dominic Solanke, and Lille striker Jonathan David fits the bill. David has bagged 109 goals and 30 assists in 232 appearances and would back himself to usurp Solanke.
The club also needs to find a lethal wide player. Bayern Munich man Leroy Sane should be on Tottenham’s radar.
Marcus Rashford is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer, and he would be a good buy if Spurs can persaude Man Utd to reduce the £40 million asking price.
